Following the invisible highways of the atmosphere

Right now, four experienced pilots are crossing North America aboard two Stemme motorgliders as part of the Trans-North America Mountain Wave Expedition 2026.

Among them are Klaus Ohlmann, one of the most accomplished soaring pilots in history and holder of numerous world records, and Markus Lowandowski from Mountain Soaring, well known within the Stemme community for introducing pilots to some of the world's most spectacular mountain flying environments.

Their mission is ambitious: follow mountain wave systems from Nevada to Alaska while supporting atmospheric research conducted together with the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

What makes this project particularly interesting is the role played by the aircraft themselves.

Operating across remote mountain regions, often hundreds of kilometres from the nearest suitable airfield, requires a level of flexibility that few sailplanes can offer. The ability to self launch, efficiently reposition when conditions require it, and then transition into pure soaring flight allows the team to focus on what matters most: finding, studying and exploiting some of the most powerful wave systems on Earth.

This is exactly the type of mission where the Stemme concept reveals its full potential, combining independence, range, performance and the unique experience of side by side soaring.

Part exploration, part science, part adventure.

Wishing Klaus, Markus and the entire team safe flying and favourable conditions as they continue their journey north.

WHEN A STEMME OPENS NEW HORIZON

A few weeks ago, we shared the remarkable achievement of Gil Souviron and Henri Castanet, who completed two exceptional wave flights of 1,508 km and 1,602 km over the Pyrenees aboard their Stemme S12.
Looking back, what remains most impressive is perhaps not the distance itself, but everything that made it possible.
